Summer for the Gods: The Scopes Trial and America's Continuing Debate Over Science and Religion

From its beginnings on stage to its portrayal by Hollywood, Inherit the Wind went on to become one of the great feats of leftist propaganda-a shameless travesty of the truth designed to change popular opinion. But the scam really began years earlier. It seems that in the summer of 1925, the sleepy hamlet of Dayton, Tennessee was cast into the national spotlight by a trial that was engineered from the very outset by atheist warriors at the ACLU. At the heart of the controversy was a Tennessee statute banning the teaching of Darwinian evolution as fact in public schools. The statute had never been enforced, but liberals saw in it the opportunity of a lifetime. Their sacrificial victim? An inconsequential part-time teacher who knew little about evolution. Prodded by the ACLU and the city fathers of Dayton, John Scopes obligingly broke the law. ACLU lawyers then invited the state to prosecute, and the rest is history. Only, not the version you learned from Hollywood.

How the liberals made monkeys out of us

What actually happened at the trial turns out to be very different from the liberal folklore. But the biggest story may be that it took a college professor - one with his liberal credentials still firmly intact - to blow the lid off the hoax.

From the trial itself, Edward Larson presents scenes you won't even find on Hollywood's cutting-room floor. But for all its bizarre theatrics, it seems that the outcome of the trial wasn't what the ACLU had hoped for. Then, along came their friends in the media and with them the birth of the mythic Scopes legend that has endured to our own day. For his role as the phony, liberal-created martyr, John Scopes got a free graduate education and a free ride through life. For the rest of America, the facts remained buried - deep - until one brave professor unearthed them and dared to tell us the truth.

"Edward Larson tells the true story of the Scopes trial brilliantly, and the truth is a lot more interesting than the myth that was presented to the public in Inherit the Wind."
-Phillip Johnson, author of Darwin on Trial

"Mr. Larson's balanced and well-written work will serve as an antidote to the worst kinds of Scopes trial mythology that infects education, law, media and politics to this very day."
