Black Rednecks and White Liberals

Lazy, lawless, and sexually immoral - that's how Northern employers and cops regarded poor Southern "rednecks" as late as the 1940s and 1950s. Many Southern blacks, Thomas Sowell explains, picked up the same habits. But while both white and black Southerners have moved up in class and affluence, Sowell notes that ghettos are still filled with "black rednecks" who have never escaped these self-destructive patterns.   It is very encouraging that some persons, like Sowell, are brave enough to discuss taboo issues. Suppressing information is never a wise long-term solution and Sowell enrichens the debate with his new perspective on a multitude of issues.

  As a northerner newly transplanted in the South, I found Dr. Sowell's essays to clear up certain questions that I started asking soon after I moved to the South. This book tackles the issues that others are afraid to take on. Thank you, Dr. Sowell, for providing explanations to such taboo issues.

  As a southerner who is lazy, lawless and sexually immoral I think that I am speaking for the vast majority of my fellow citizens when I say to the reviewer before me to just move back up north and don't worry about us down here in the south.
